Certificate in Standard English

Introduction

Our Standard English Course emphasizes students’ development of the four major skills in the English language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Classroom and activity-based teaching methods are crafted to stimulate and inspire learning. The course adopts a six-level proficiency path.

The Oral English Course emphasizes practical delivery of speaking and listening skills and stresses effective and fluent English communication in everyday situations and business settings.

Preparatory Course For IELTS focuses on mastering the skills and techniques essential to excel in the four areas of the test: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Teachers’ Qualifications

All teachers, both local and native English-speaking lecturers, are registered with the MOE and have substantial professional teaching experience.

Duration/Intake

We have classes running throughout the year. The duration of the courses can be as short as six months or up to two years, depending on the students' English proficiency. Classes run for 6 hours daily. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to participants who have achieved at least 90% of class attendance.

Admission Requirement(s)

For Standard English, the applicants requirement is minimum 6 years of age. For IELTS, the applicants requirement is minimum 15 years of age. Course applicants are required to sit for a placement test to assess the level of their English proficiency. After that, they will be allocated to a suitable class based on their performance in the placement test. (Please refer to the diagram)

 

Levels
 
 

i)   CERTIFICATE IN STANDARD ENGLISH ( LEVEL 1 ) BEGINNER    

12-week course for students with no previous English education with an examination week at the end.  IELTS peg Band 1.

ii)  CERTIFICATE IN STANDARD ENGLISH ( LEVEL 2 ) ELEMENTARY

12-week course to root the basics of English with an examination week at the end. Focuses on simple grammar forms and everyday communication. IELTS peg Band 2.

iii) CERTIFICATE IN STANDARD ENGLISH ( LEVEL 3 ) PRE-INTERMEDIATE

12-week course to introduce more complex grammar forms and to widen vocabulary. There is a week of examination at the end. IELTS peg Band 3.

iv) CERTIFICATE IN STANDARD ENGLISH ( LEVEL 4 ) INTERMEDIATE

12-week grammar course for students with average knowledge of English. Focuses on vocabulary extension and grammar usage.

Students will also focus on oral application and practices. As such there will be an Oral component to the course, providing students with  the opportunity to practice and improve their speaking abilities. 

Week 13 is examination period.  IELTS peg Band 4.

v)  CERTIFICATE IN STANDARD ENGLISH ( LEVEL 5 ) UPPER-INTERMEDIATE

A higher level English course for 12 weeks, preparing students for more complex conversations and formal situations. There is a week for examinations at the end. IELTS peg Band 5.

vi) CERTIFICATE IN STANDARD ENGLISH ( LEVEL 6 ) ADVANCED

A 12-week course for high-level students which focusing on language usage in all four skills.

Besides intensive writing exercises and vocabulary- building, an Oral component is added to the course to further enhance  students' speaking proficiency. 

Week 13 is examination period. IELTS peg Band 5.5. 

vii) PREPARATORY COURSE FOR INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS)

IELTS 1 (Foundation)
An 8-week course for students who intend to take IELTS examination but the proficiency of English requires additional training and application. The course includes grammar and vocabulary besides the four skills. Week 9 is for examinations. The course is also designed as part of the English training component for the HND course. Students can expect achieve an IELTS equivalent of 5.5 by end of the course.

IELTS 2 (Preparation)
An 8-week long course design to prepare students for the IELTS examination. The course focuses on introducing and 8 intensive practice of IELTS exercises. Week 9 is for examinations. The course is also part of the NHD course. Students can also join the course if they have at least an IELTS level of 5.5.
Students can expect achieve an IELTS equivalent o f 6.0 by end of the course.
