Oral Chinese is a series of four textbooks designed for those studying Chinese as a second language. It can be used in the classroom as well as for independent study.
The lessons are arranged to facilitate accumulative learning. After completing this course, students will have progressed from elementary to intermediate level, and will be able to interact successfully in social settings. As the title implies, this course aims to help learners meet the need for more effective communication in Chinese.

The course consists of a total of forty lessons, per book with ten lessons. Each lesson is composed of a study guide, which covers the main language points being presented, useful new words, sentence patterns and numerous exercises. Relevant information on Chinese culture and society is also included. Further reference materials are provided at the end of the book, which include a grammar summary, simulated tests and answers, a reference to the exercises, and a vocabulary list. Students can use them to study at their own pace, and to evaluate their progress themselves.

Basic
Basic is a new full-length foundation course in basic Chinese for absolute beginners. Major features include:

Hanyu pinyin : phonetics and pronounciation of Chinese characters .
Eight broad communicative themes .
Key vocabulary : about 200 words .

Elementary
Elementary is for those who have learned a little Chinese but lack confidence to build on it. It provides a foundation to the structure of the language, Major features include:

Basic Grammar
Ten broad communicative themes .
Key vocabulary : about 300 words.

Intermediate
Intermediate is for those who need to improve their communication skills in Chinese, which takes a fresh and constructive approach in the way the students use the language.

The course consist of around twenty broad communicative themes. Students are encouraged to try out a broad range of hands on communication activities, major features include:

Active grammar appendix coving other areas of grammar, and exercises to practise them. Listening appendix, with tapescripts of listening comprehension tasks.
